Kearney, Neb. (October 24, 2005) — The 2004 Firefighter Special Harley Davidson has a new address to call home.  Lee Hause unlocked the drawing box and firefighter Rick Bourque reached for a ticket from the nearly sold out raffle.  1640 tickets were sold from the original 1700 tickets printed, at $20.00 apiece.

Several hundred firefighters from across Nebraska were on hand for the drawing at the 123rd Annual Conference of the Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters Association in Kearney, Saturday evening.  And the winner is… Dave Krecklow!  This is the time when we insert the caveat “winner need not be present to win.”

Shortly past eight p.m. Eldon Moser made a phone call to the Krecklow home in Elkhorn just west of Omaha.  Dave answered the phone, “Hello”.

Eldon very officially asked “Is this Dave Krecklow?”

Dave reluctantly replied, “Yes.”

Eldon asked “Did you buy a ticket for a motorcycle raffle?”

“Yes?” questioned Krecklow.

“Well, Congratulations!  You are the winner of the 2004 Firefighter Special Harley Davidson Motorcycle from the Nebraska Firefighters Museum & Education Center Raffle,” said Moser.

“Oh My God!” exclaimed Krecklow.  “Can you hold on for a minute?”  Krecklow took a seat in the kitchen, and asked “You’ve got to be kidding, I’ve never won anything.”

Moser assured Krecklow that he was indeed the winner, and that plans to take ownership of the motorcycle would follow in a few days.

Dave Krecklow is presented the keys from Foundation Board member and Kearney Firefighter Gene Beerbohm.

At Kearney's Firestation #2 Foundation board member Gene Beerbohm hands over the keys to Dave Krecklow.  After receiving the keys Krecklow gazed down at the fire engine red machine and exclaimed, “This is a beauty, I can’t believe it’s mine."

At the Krecklow home, Dave’s wife Judy was watching the World Series game in another room.  Judy heard the exclamation, and probably thought the worst.  You see they have a son in Iraq serving in the military.  Judy only had half the conversation.  Dave joined Judy and said “You’re not going to believe this.”

As Judy sat up on the edge of her lounger, eyes wide and totally focused on Dave’s every word, “What?”

“We won that motorcycle” explained Dave.

Relieved that the news was not what she feared, Judy offered “You’re kidding?”

Indeed the Krecklow’s were the winners.  It was Judy’s idea to spend the $20 to buy just one ticket, number 0557, never dreaming that they would ever win.  When asked what Krecklow would be doing with his new treasure, he replied “I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it.”

When asked about winning, Krecklow said that he has never won anything.  Well actually he recollects winning a football when he was 9 from the lumber yard.  Certainly nothing ever approaching the value of the more than $20,000 valued Harley Davidson.

Krecklow does not currently own another motorcycle.  Krecklow’s son works for a man in Omaha that has a collection of motorcycles, and is very active with the “Make A Wish” foundation.  There is a young boy with Lukemia who wants a ride on a motorcycle, and Dave is going to make that wish happen with the help of his son’s boss.

Krecklow is a retired 19 year veteran of the Elkhorn Fire Department, and a retired Douglas County Deputy Sheriff.

Krecklow made the trip to Kearney with a special trailer to take ownership of the prize.  Making the transfer on behalf of the Nebraska Firefighters Foundation were Vice Chairperson Doralene Weed and Gene Beerbohm.  Beerbohm presented Krecklow with the keys while Dave was seated on the motorcycle.  “This is a beauty, I can’t believe it’s mine."
